The Big Tease III ~ Fire & Ink

Post by fotolistic on January 24th, 2010   In Category : Fashion, Meetup, On-Stage, Photography

The Big Tease III ~ Fire & Ink….So where are my photos of "The Big Tease I" and "The Big Tease II"? Unfortunately, I wasn’t there to cover those events and what a shame that was! So many missed photo opportunities! The Big Tease is an annual event organized by the ** NY Pin Up Club ** (Brandon Herman) that showcases pin-up fashion, burlesque performances and other sideshows geared towards entertaining and fueling our appreciation of the genre.

This year’s event showcased two pin-up fashion shows:
"Matinee" by Jacci Jaye featuring rockin’ red hot corsets
"Bombshell" by Keriann, featuring retro-styled swimsuits

Followed by a series of sexy burlesque performances by:
Kristen Lee aka "Miss Coney Island Pin-Up" 2008
and Arden Leigh

Last but not least, Fire Performances by
Justina Flash
and Miss Em

It would be an understatement to describe the event as spectacular. As you view my photographs, I hope that you can feel the level of energy and excitement I felt.

All photographs shot in Raw Format with a Canon 5D on Shutter Speed Priority.
I used either a 50mm f/1.4 Lens or the 85mm f/1.8 Lens at ISO 1000.
There are a handful of photographs shot using the Orbis Ring Flash.
Processed with Aperture and Photoshop CS4.

My friend and I walk into Don Hill with the band Rocko Dorsey was already playing.
Boy, can he sing and put up a show!
Not to mention I got some great photos capturing his onstage charisma.

The opening act for the burlesque show was performed by Arden Leigh. Her skit was very inviting and interactive. So much so that she actually walked into the enraptured crowd, grabbed a bewildered photographer and gave him a big wet kiss. What a lucky guy! Let’s just hope he wiped the lipstick off his mouth before he got home to his wife.

Follow by Miss Em… Let me tell you, she’s hot!

Fire hot, that is…I think my lens melted a bit.

Ahhh… Miss Coney Island Pinup 2008—Kristen Lee. I bet she gave a great performance because the second she got into the spotlight, everyone by the edge of the stage stood up, blocking my view. The following photos were shot with the camera held high above my head. Doesn’t pay to be short in this case…

Some highlights of the corsets fashion show.

Justina Flash, with her spectacular burlesque performance while all the while, twisting a flaming hula hoop around her body.
Talk about multi-tasking!

These are my high-key glamour portraits of the night. However, many of them were serendipitously lit by the spotlights or someone else’s flash firing off around the model.
These photographs were mostly overexposed due to the extra light throwing off my camera’s metering.
Luckily, I was able to salvage the image with Photoshop.

The following portraits were shot using the Orbis Ring Flash adaptor. This is the third time I’ve used it in public since acquiring it last year. The results are quite in line with what I was hoping for. See for yourself.

Ashton Warren and her delicious cupcake minis.

Playing around with vintage effects using an image of fabulous Kristen Lee.

Last but not least, another vintage effects photo featuring Miss Em and Kristen Lee.

    Great post, keep it up.

  3. Hullo, how are you doing? I really like your blog! I was wondering if you might assist me (I am certain other readers might also be interested). I want to get into creating a blog also and I currently write a blog with Wordpress, but it is quite confusing for me to create and I would like to attempt to get several training materials or courses (hopefully free) that can hopefully assist me in making use of Word Press correctly. As a word press web master yourself, do u maybe maybe know where i could learn tutorials to be able to do this myself?? Thank you

Pin-up meetup by the promenade at Riverside Park. Shoot started 45 minute before sunset. Very difficult lighting to work with because we were at the West side. But I think most of the shots came out pretty good. Thanks to the wonderful and enthusiastic group of models.

This photo shoot was organized by Brandon Herman of The New York Pin-Up Photography Meetup Group from Meetup.com.

Present at the event were 15 to 20 photographers, ranging from beginner to professional, and a handful of models. It was great watching how these photographers directed the models for each shot, staged the props and calibrated the lighting. It is definitely a fantastic learning experience for anyone who’s interested in fashion photography.

The theme of this event was Winter Wonderland. The studio was decorated with wads of cotton “snow” and lots of snowflake ornaments. Models in vintage-styled fashion, posed with seasonal props such as a sled, a pair of skis, a stuffed penguin, six- packs of Coca-Cola. Occasionally, there would be snowfall– a white confetti tossed onto the models from behind the scenes. Extremely playful. Hope you enjoy the photos!

NOTE: Models, if you want high-res copies of your photos, please shoot me an email at <hoyu.yiu@yello77.com> and I will send you a link where you’ll be able to download the photos. (What is showcased here is only about 70% of what I’ve shot, so feel free to ask about the other photos.
